Multimodal Bipeds

A multimodal biped is a two-legged robot designed to adapt to different types of terrain thanks to the ability to quickly change the type of foot it walks with.

 

Traditionally, biped robots have always been built with only one type of foot. This choice comes from the fact that gait control is closely tied to how the foot interacts with the surface: if the foot changes, the dynamics of the motion change completely.

 

The problem is that there is no perfect foot for every terrain!

 

To overcome this limit, the SCOUT robot introduces for the first time in the world a multimodal system:

  • it is equipped with different types of interchangeable feet;

  • the control system automatically recognizes which foot is installed;

  • it adapts the kinematics and dynamics of the step in real time.

In this way there is no need to change the whole robot to tackle different terrains: just swap the feet, just like a mountaineer changes boots depending on the mountain.

Voice Interaction Module

The integration of a LiDAR and the depth camera, with pre-optimized positioning and calibrated field of view, provides a “ready-to-use” solution for 3D mapping and precise localization in the environment. This architecture enables advanced autonomous navigation and dynamic obstacle avoidance functions, improving stability, accuracy, and responsiveness in complex scenarios.

With the addition of the robotic arm expansion, the system enables the implementation of mobile manipulation scenarios, whole-body control and motion planning.

Equipped with an NVIDIA NX module and a high-fidelity microphone array, the system supports voice activation and voice control, enhancing interaction and natural-language adaptability across different scenarios
